Becoming a Great CEO

Whether you’re a new CEO in the company, or you’re simply trying to improve as the existing CEO, you have a lot of work ahead of you.  When striving to improve a company, you have to start by thinking about the workers.  In most companies, research has found that only 5% of the workforce actually understands the overall company strategy.  When you task your workers with being innovative, creative and goal-oriented, you have to remember that they can only achieve these goals if they understand the overall company goals.

One of the most important qualities in the CEO is transparency. The more that the company understands the CEO’s goals and the executive plans, the better each person will be at his job.  Teamwork is also an incredibly important aspect of the overall working of the company. When employees feel that they are working together on tasks, rather than competing with each other to look good to the executives, they are more likely to get quality work done.

Another quality which is often difficult for CEOs to grasp and to execute is to give each worker more power.  CEOs like to feel that they are in control and they are managing the process.  If, however, each worker feels a sense of responsibility for the tasks at hand, and a sense of commitment to the larger picture, they are more likely to work better and to work for the common goal.

The more creativity and power you offer to the people, the more that they will rise to the challenge. This often feels counterintuitive to the CEO who knows how to be in charge and in control.  However, it really does work when you give it a try.
